WEEKLY CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ACTION: Join us on Tuesday, December 12 at noon to visit offices of Senators Collins and King. Meet insidethe Federal Building on Harlow Street in the lobby (go through Security screening and take a left) at 11:45 a.m.

FOCUS TOPICS: Republican Tax Plan, Jerusalem.

Tax “Reform”

This week a conference committee will attempt to reconcile House and Senate versions of the tax overhaul. The result is likely to have harmful consequences for healthcare <http://blog.mecep.org/2017/12/study-embraced-by-senator-collins-actually-affirms-that-her-plan-will-not-prevent-people-from-losing-health-insurance-and-paying-higher-premiums/>, the disabled <http://bangordailynews.com/2017/12/06/opinion/contributors/senate-tax-bill-a-lose-lose-for-disabled-mainers/>, low-income housing <http://www.pressherald.com/2017/12/06/house-tax-bill-threatens-to-scuttle-hundreds-of-new-low-income-housing-units-in-maine/>, and education <http://www.pressherald.com/2017/12/07/commentary-tax-bills-would-be-an-assault-on-educational-opportunities/>. Latest news indicates that President Trump wants to follow these Christmas cuts with a Jan Plan to use executive orders <https://www.politico.com/story/2017/12/11/trump-welfare-reform-safety-net-288623> to shred what’s left of the social safety net.

Senator Collins says she’ll read and think about the final version of the bill before deciding how to vote. We hope Republican leadership gives her time to do so. We’ll encourage her to vote No on a bill that will make life difficult for tens of thousands of elderly, working, and disabled Mainers.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem is holy to three religions and the acknowledged capital for both Israelis and Palestinians. For these reasons, settlement of the city’s status has been reserved <https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/09/world/middleeast/jerusalem-trump-capital.html?ref=todayspaper> for the final stages of peace negotiations. President Trump’s latest episode of reckless unilateralism has sabotaged chances of peace for both Israelis and Palestinians, further destabilized the whole Middle East, and increased US isolation from the rest of the world community.

We’ll ask Senator Collins when moderate Republicans will decide they’ve paid too high a price for support of the “Trump agenda?”

We welcome all to join us—we provide a safe and supportive environment for citizen activism. If you can’t participate in person, please call Senator Collins’ office (945-0417) to add you voice to ours.
