WEEKLY CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ACTION: Join us on Tuesday, December 19 at noon to visit offices of Senators Collins and King. Meet inside the Federal Building on Harlow Street in the lobby (go through Security screening and take a left) at 11:45 a.m.
Tax “reform”
We expect that on Wednesday the Senate will vote to pass a final tax plan that engorges the deficit to provide tax breaks for the wealthy, and privileges inherited wealth over an honest day’s wage. Polling shows that Mainers of all political persuasions <https://americansfortaxfairness.org/wp-content/uploads/ME-Tax-Survey-Toplines-by-Hart-Research-11-21-17.pdf> dislike the basics of this bill, and like it even less when they know more. Senator Collins has worked very hard to improve the final version, and we appreciate her efforts. But a better version of a bad bill is not good enough. Raising revenue to fund government services is what government does. If “No taxation without representation” is the rule, heeding constituents on tax reform should be the converse. If this bill passes, how will Senator Collins fund government services we depend on: education, transportation, health services and public health, environmental health and safety, public safety?
Sexual harassment
This issue is too important to litigate in social media or the public press. We need a whole system of training, legislation and regulation—from with hiring to appropriate sanctions—that protects ordinary working men and women. We’ll thank Senator Collins for supporting <https://www.collins.senate.gov/newsroom/senators-collins-murray-call-additional-funding-and-legislative-measures-address-sexual> efforts to improve working conditions for Congressional staffers. But what about the rest of us?
Mueller investigation
Why is President Trump obsessed with de-legitimizing the work of the Special Counsel—indeed of the whole FBI? What can we do to ensure investigative due process?
We welcome all to join us—we provide a safe and supportive environment for citizen activism. If you can’t participate in person, please call Senator Collins’ office (945-0417) or email at www.collins.senate.gov/contact <https://www.collins.senate.gov/contact> to add you voice to ours.
