Hello to all,
Some of you are aware that Casella/BGS have requested a DEP license amendment that would allow them to bring more MSW (curbside garbage) to the state owned Juniper Ridge Landfill. Their current deadline for this practice is March 31, 2018. In 2003/2004 we were promised two things when JRL became state facility:
No MSW Allowed
No out of state waste
Now after 14 years, we have a pile of crap in Old Town that is almost half from beyond Maine's borders, and MSW deliveries have grown over the years. Aside from the noxious nature of this waste stream and the generation of massive amounts of greenhouse gases, allowing Casella, with the silent complicity of the state as owner, to bring more MSW to JRL destroys our Maine Waste Hierarchy which mandates that wastes be Reduced, Reused, Recycled, Composted, Incinerated, and only landfilled as a last resort. Kathy Tarbuck is the DEP person to write to, at kathy.tarbuck at maine.gov <mailto:kathy.tarbuck at maine.gov>.
The interested persons in this matter received word of the beginning of a 20 day comment period at 4:59 on Dec. 15th, and was clearly intended to exclude the Public from having input. I held off spreading the word for fear of disturbing peoples' peaceful Holiday pursuits, and now we have only until Jan. 4th to get letters in. The main points are: Hold a Public Hearing, and Violation of our Waste Hierarchy. There is no need to be nearly as lengthy as my attached letter.
In related news, I will be speaking about JRL issues with Don Cookson on WZON tomorrow morning at 6:15 AM- so that is Dec. 28th on AM620, beginning at 6:15 in the morning. They also replay some morning show at 3 PM each day and archive. I will also be talking about a gathering in Augusta next Wednesday, Jan. 3rd beginning at 9 AM in the Hall of Flags organized by the Alliance for the Common Good which promises to be a powerful and inspirational experience. Hope to see you there! Please share this...
