Subject: Dr. Judith Herman to speak at The University of Maine at
Farmington April 10th 2:00pm
Dear all: As you might remember, Dr. Judith Herman, Harvard professor
and author of TRAUMA AND RECOVERY, was our scheduled keynote speaker
at last year's conference on PTSD. She had to cancel at the last
moment, but we promised to bring her to Maine somehow. Well, we're
proud to join forces with UMF's Rehabilitation Club to sponsor her
appearance at UMF on Thursday, April 10th at 2:00pm in Nordica
Auditorium.
Here's some information about her:
Judith Lewis Herman M.D. is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at
Harvard Medical School and Director of Training at the Victims of
Violence Program at The Cambridge Hospital, Cambridge, MA. Dr.
Herman received her medical degree at Harvard Medical School and her
training in general and community psychiatry at Boston University
Medical Center. She is the author of two award-winning books:
Father-Daughter Incest (Harvard University Press, 1981), and Trauma
and Recovery (Basic Books, 1992). She has lectured widely on the
subject of sexual and domestic violence. She is the recipient of the
1996 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for
Traumatic Stress Studies and the 2000 Woman in Science Award from the
American Medical Women's Association. In 2003 she was named a
Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Her discussion on the 10th will touch on the following:
Workshop Outline: Empowerment and Recovery for Trauma Survivors
Judith Lewis Herman, M.D.
Trauma destroys the social systems of care, protection, and meaning
that support human life. The essential features of psychological
trauma are disempowerment and disconnection from
others. The recovery process, therefore, is based on empowerment of
the survivor and restoration of relationships. This lecture will
> >review the prevalence of trauma and of posttraumatic stress disorder,
> >with special attention to the experiences of women, both in the armed
> >services and in civilian life. We will then review the principles
> >upon which a collaborative therapeutic alliance may be established,
> >and outline a staged approach to the treatment of trauma survivors.
> >The complementary roles of bio-behavioral treatments, individual and
> >group psychotherapy, self-help, and social action will be discussed.
